Kids are starting to use technology at younger and younger ages. Here is an info graphic taken from the Rasmussen College: School of Education Blog showing the relationship between technology and child development. What are your thoughts on the current use of technology by the younger generations? What challenges does this present?
Recently I had the the opportunity to do a month long internship in two different special education classrooms. To my amazement, each classroom had a harmonious integration of technology in which the students were well versed in. These were three websites that I saw used a lot in the classroom. Click on the website titles to check out the website.
1. Dance Mat Typing: This site provides students with a fun and interactive introduction to touch typing. The site is divided into four levels with three levels each to allow the students to master each level. 2. Starfall: A free public service to teach children to read with phonics. Their systematic phonics approach, in conjunction with phonemic awareness practice, is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, special education, homeschool, and English language development (ELD, ELL, ESL). 3. Math Worksheet Generator: Great resource for teachers!! This site allows you to create printable math worksheets in the areas of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time, etc.. that are easy to customize. If you decide to purchase a subscription to the site, then it allows you access to hundreds of more worksheets. Have fun! Update (5/2015): My Pinterest has really blossomed into a space thats is filled with all sorts of resources. Currently I have three different boards: Teaching Resources, 2nd Grade, and a 4th Grade board that are updated regularly. Feel free to follow them or take what you want from it.
Pinterest. If you havent used it or checked it out yet, than you should. I was slow to jump on the bandwagon because it seemed like another social media site. On top of that it had a scrap booking feel which was not really my thing. However when it came time for me to plan a lesson I realized Pintrest had a great resource element. You can find sample projects to posters, coloring pages to behavior charts, and everything in between.Whats really nice is you can create boards in which you save the pins (pages) you like. Below is a screen shot of my Teaching Resources Board. Start your Pinterest Board today! I recently started following this Facebook page called "Educational Technology". They have a lot of great tips and tools especially for using technology in education. Click here to visit their facebook page.
