My StoryComing from the sub-burbs of Charlotte, North Carolina i'm half Sudanese and half Black American. From an early age I was teaching people not only younger than myself but older as well. Rather it was offering virtue classes for children in my community, camp counseling, leading book studies, or teaching my imaginary students, it became the one extra curricular activity I was good at. It wasn't till the year after I graduated high school that my love for teaching developed. Taking a year off before starting college, my love of Latin culture took me to Honduras,Central America for one year. An opportunity to teach at a private bilingual elementary school in the capital arose, and it had my name written all over it.
With no formal education in teaching, I was assigned to teach 4th grade, all subjects. I was challenged to become a teacher overnight through planning my unit, creating lesson plans, speaking with parents, etc. Although I was not able to stick with fourth grade for the whole year, I was still able to teach. My position changed to a full time Kindergarten assistant teacher, computer teacher, substitute, and after school tutor. The funny thing was, after doing one year of teaching, although I was not ready to be back in the classroom, I was ready to learn how to improve my teaching. Once I started my education coursework, I fell in love with teaching and was ready to be out in the field working with children again! |
